Decision trail
Decision date 20/02/2025 · Reference ↗
Kongsberg Automotive, based in Kongsberg in southern Norway, is a major supplier of parts to leading car brands such as Volvo, Ford, Scania and Jaguar Land Rover. It stopped all direct exports to Russia in 2022 on its own initiative, calling sales to an “aggressor state” “immoral and reprehensible.” But leaked Russian customs documents obtained by Schema show that at least 126 shipments of Kongsberg Automotive parts were made to Russia between July 2022 and April 2024 by Hidirusta Otomotiv, one of the Norwegian company’s customers in Turkey that has not joined the Western coalition of sanctions against Moscow. According to records from commercial customs data aggregator ImportGenius, the Istanbul-based company Hidirusta Otomotiv had no recorded shipments to Russia before Russia’s invasion in February 2022. That seemed to change overnight: By 2023, Russia had become the Turkish firm’s largest market — and it remains so today, according to ImportGenius records. Most of Hidirusta Otomotiv’s shipments to Russia consisted of Kongsberg Automotive parts, which it purchased from other intermediaries, while the rest it imported directly from the Norwegian company. Kongsberg Automotive called the resale of its parts to Russia “unacceptable and contrary to our values.”

Kongsberg Automotive is a Automotive company based in Norway. Current Russia status in our dataset is scaling back: a wind-down in progress still leaves residual contracts, staff, inventory or distributors that can trigger sanctions or reputational exposure. Eastern Europe Impact translates those facts into business consequences — sanctions screening, supply-chain exposure and reconstruction-side opportunity — with transparent confidence labels rather than speculation.
